Working groups

Working group 1

WG1 focuses on identifying the best methods for monitoring cyanobacteria and cyanotoxins to help water managers assess bloom risks. It evaluates in situ (water sampling, sensors) and remote (satellite, drone) detection methods, along with advanced ‘omics’ techniques. The group also explores autonomous monitoring systems and promotes citizen science through smartphone applications for public engagement.

Working group 2

WG2 focuses on long-term strategies to reduce nutrient inflows and mitigate cyanobacterial blooms. It assesses nutrient loss reduction measures from both agricultural and point sources across Europe, considering their effectiveness and financial costs. The group will develop a toolbox of mitigation strategies and a Decision Support Tool to guide farmers and stakeholders in cost-effective nutrient management.

Working group 3

WG3 evaluates short-term cyanobacteria control methods by gathering local protocols, success criteria, and costs. It assesses chemical and physical treatments (e.g., flocculation, aeration, ultrasound) while making unpublished or regionally restricted data accessible. The group will develop a review and Decision Support Tool to compare methods and guide water managers in selecting effective solutions.

Working group 4

WG4 integrates findings from WG1-3 to develop web-based Decision Support Tools (DSTs) for water managers, farmers, and policymakers. These tools will guide users in selecting cost-effective cyanobacteria control methods and optimizing nutrient management in agricultural fields. The group will also organize workshops and training sessions to ensure effective DST implementation and gather feedback for continuous improvement.

Working group 5

WG5 ensures effective knowledge transfer between scientists, water managers, farmers, and stakeholders. It develops the communication strategy, manages the website, newsletter, social media, and outreach materials, and promotes open-access publications. The group collaborates with COST Media and local organizers to engage stakeholders and monitor the impact of CYANOACTION’s activities.
